About 50 local 7th
graders from different Lawrence County schools recently
participated in Project Lead the Way’s Summer Gateway
Academy for Engineering.
The camp was provided to the
students by Collins Career Center with contributions from
AEP, Liebert Corp., and the Ohio College Tech Prep South
Consortium, as well as the Society of Manufacturing
Engineers and PLTW Ohio. The camp is part of an on going
effort by Collins and our local participating schools to let
kids experience engineering, science and math in a practical
and fun way, as well as introduce them to the Project Lead
the Way pre-engineering program, and project based learning.
Kids that are going into the
7th grade this fall at South Point, Dawson
Bryant, Ironton, Chesapeake, and Rock Hill, were transported
to Collins Career Center by their local schools to learn
about several different aspects of Science, Math and
Engineering such as Aerodynamics, Rocketry, Microsoft Excel,
Autodesk Inventor, (3D modeling) The Design Process,
Assembly Line Manufacturing, and others, while building
gliders, 2 liter bottle rockets, and an assembly line for
ice cream sundaes. A good time was had by all.
PLTW Collins Career Center
would like to thank the local participating schools, and the
above sponsors for their help in providing this camp as well
as the schools and kids that participated.
