PELL GRANT

What is a Pell Grant? The Pell Grant is one of the best known Federal Student Aid Programs designed to assist students while furthering his or her education.  The Pell Grant is a Title IV Federal Grant that does not require repayment.

What are the eligibility requirements of the Pell Grant?

  • you must be enrolled in a program of training of at least 600 clock hours;

  • one of the factors used in determining eligibility is your total family income.  Since eligibility is based on adjusted gross income, earned income credit, the amount of tax reported, and the number of people in the household, we cannot provide actual income amounts that would help you determine if you would be eligible for the Pell Grant. You should complete the FAFSA to find out if you are eligible, no matter how much your income is/was.  In some cases, if you are not eligible for the maximum Pell Grant Award, you may still be eligible for a partial award;

  • you cannot be in default of a Federal student loan

  • you must be registered with Selective Service (if you are male age 18-25);

  • other requirements will apply once you have started training.

What is the amount of a Pell Grant? The calculated Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the processed FAFSA and the program of training you select will determine the amount of your Pell Grant Award.

When and how do I apply for the Pell Grant? You can apply for the Pell Grant by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid “FAFSA on the web”.  Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and follow the instructions for filing a FAFSA.  You will need to enter Collins Career Center’s school code, 015524, in order for our Financial Aid Office to receive a copy of the processed FAFSA.  Approximately 7 days after you have filed the FAFSA, contact the Financial Aid Office to schedule an appointment to submit and review the results. You are required to file the FAFSA and meet with the Financial Aid Office BEFORE starting classes (the process for applying for Financial Aid is not complete until you have met with the Financial Aid Office).

When are the Pell Grant funds disbursed? Pell Grant funds are NOT disbursed prior to the student starting his/her program of training.  The student must attend 60% of a payment period before receiving Pell Grant funds (see Financial Aid Handbook of Policies and Procedures for more detailed information).
