WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT (WIA)
What is WIA?
The
WIA program is also a type of Grant that does not require
repayment. WIA is to assist students with tuition and other
school related expenses the Pell Grant does not cover. You
must apply for a Pell Grant before applying for WIA.
What are the eligibility guidelines for WIA?
The basic eligibility guidelines are low income or loss of
job; however, the guidelines vary from state to state,
therefore, you should contact your local WIA representative
to find out what the qualifications are for you
specifically.
Can I
start class before applying for WIA?
You should NOT start class prior to talking to your local
WIA representative. You must be pre-certified with your
local WIA office prior to starting your program of
training. If you start without being WIA certified, you may
jeopardize your eligibility for funds.
What
does WIA certified mean?
WIA
certification means that you must be registered with your
local WIA office, which includes interviewing, assessment,
job profiling, etc.
What
if my Pell Grant pays for my tuition?
If
you are eligible for a full Pell Grant Award that pays for
your entire tuition, you may still qualify for WIA
supportive services. WIA supportive services include, but
are not limited to (depending on state agency), travel
stipend and child care services.
