Environmental and Agricultural Systems

Programs offered in the Environmental and Agricultural Systems field are related to technical and professional level careers in animal and crop production; agricultural services and engineering; food processing; horticulture; natural resource management; environmental services; and agricultural and environmental education, communications and research.

Program choices in Environmental and Agricultural Systems offer areas of specialization in the fields of Agriculture, Natural Resources, Food Technology and Processing/Pro-Start.  Many of the lab activities developed for the programs offered through the Environmental and Engineering Systems Cluster are offered at our Farm Complex off campus.


Agriculture | Natural Resources | Food Technology and Processing / Pro-Start


Agriculture

Students enrolled in this program at Collins Career Center are involved in all phases of agricultural production.

Program Instruction Covers:

  • Plant science

  • Soil science

  • Environmental Science

  • Animal Science

  • Using and maintaining farm equipment and machinery

  • Basic construction skills

  • Basic welding skills

  • Basic electricity skills

  • Agricultural business management

 

Post-Secondary Education Opportunities:

Graduates of the Agriculture program offered by Collins Career Center may enter adult education or technical school programs in agricultural business, agricultural and food products processing operations and management, agricultural mechanization, agricultural power machinery operation, or agricultural supplies retailing and wholesaling.

 

College degree programs are also available in soil science, agricultural business, farm and ranch management, and horticulture.

 

Employment Opportunities:

Graduates of the Agriculture program may find entry-level positions as:

  • Farm/ Ranch hand

  • Greenhouse Worker

  • Floral Designer

  • Groundskeeper

  • Private Gardener

  • Farmer

Natural Resources

 

The Natural Resources Program focuses on resource conservation, forestry skills, and environmental studies.  Students develop skills through outdoor projects, which include the definition, construction, and maintenance of an outdoor recreational area.

  • Natural Resources

  • Forestry Management

  • Soil Conservation

  • Mapping and Surveying

  • Wildlife Conservation

  • Water Resources

  • Use of Equipment and Machinery

 

Post-Secondary Education Opportunities

Graduates of the Natural Resources program offered by Collins Career Center may enter adult education or technical school programs in forest harvesting and production technology, water quality and wastewater treatment technology, forestry, fishing technology, conservation and renewable natural resources, or mining technology.

 

College degree programs are also available in forestry, forest products processing, soil science, environmental health, conservation, wildlife, fish management, recreation, park resources, and leisure studies.

 

Employment Opportunities

Graduates of this program may find entry-level employment as a logger, park worker, trapper, or forestry aide.

Food Technology and Processing/ Pro-Start

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Food Science and Technology/ ProStart program at Collins Career Center features dynamic curriculum developed by the Educational Foundation of the National Restaurant Association to teach, test, and award industry-recognized certificates to students meeting high academic standards in hospitality education.  This curriculum, ProStart, is developed to increase the quality and employability of today's high school graduates by providing them with training related to important job skills as well as opportunities for careers and higher education. 

Students participating in this program will focus on mastering skills and techniques for the preparation and serving of food by operating a school restaurant and catering service.

Whether students are looking to enter the job market or are making plans for college, the Food Science and Technology/ProStart program is a great first step!  Students may be hired for internships by qualified foodservice operations.  There, they will receive firsthand training form worksite mentors.  Back in the classroom, lessons and activities come alive as students make real-world connections.  Practical, lively learning takes place both on the job and in the classroom.

With the Food Science and Technology/ProStart program, students get the chance to see just how bright their futures can be!

Post Secondary Education Opportunities

Graduates of this program may enter adult education or technical school programs in food catering, culinary arts, banking, or pastry chef training.

 

Employment Opportunities

Graduates of the Food Technology and Processing/ Pro-Start program offered by Collins Career Center may find entry-level employment as a bus person, counter attendant, restaurant host/ hostess, restaurant cashier, restaurant server, kitchen helper, cook, deli worker, or assistant chef.
