TEACHER ACADEMY

The role of the teacher academy is to prepare students to go into careers in education. Sophomores who have an interest in becoming kindergarten, elementary, high school teachers, coaches, trainers, counselors or administrators should investigate this program.

Students will have an opportunity to experience teaching strategies and philosophies, legal issues, the role of education in our society, curriculum and the rewards of teaching. Students will take the ACT college entrance exam, Praxis I teacher exam and can certify as an Ohio educational paraprofessional.

All students participate in on-site experiences at local day care centers and with a mentor teacher at an elementary or high school. Seniors may participate in an apprenticeship program that is a paid aid learning position.

Students create a portfolio showing expertise in educational experiences. The portfolio is an integral piece in their post-secondary education. With a completed portfolio, good grades and solid attendance students can qualify for scholarships at local universities. Articulation agreements are in place between the Teacher Academy and Ohio University Southern and Shawnee State University that can help to provide financial assistance.
