PROJECT LEAD THE WAY

Project Lead the Way is a nationally recognized pre-engineering program preparing students to help solve American industry’s high technology employee needs. The curriculum is project based with approximately 1/3 theory and 2/3 hands-on activities.

Students begin in grade 8 with Gateway to Technology. Gateway is designed to give students initial engineering based exploration in science, technology and math. There are five units that show students how engineers use technology to solve everyday problems. The five units are: design and modeling, the magic of electrons, the science of technology, automation and robotics and aerospace engineering.

The high school program is designed to aid students seeking more depth and hands-on knowledge of engineering, technology, science, math and engineering related careers. Classes are taught in conjunction with college preparatory math and science courses. Classes taught include:

Grade 9 – Introduction to Engineering Design (Students use AutoDesk and Inventor software to learn the process of computer modeling and product design).

Grade 10 – Principles of Engineering (Students explore technology systems and manufacturing processes to find out how engineering is used daily).

Grade 11 – Bio-Technical Engineering (Among the life engineering units studied are genetics, alternative fuels, forensics and bio-medical engineering).

Grade 12 – Civil Engineering and Architecture (Students present projects with an emphasis on local building and design. This course is also survey based with extensive exploration into the vast number of engineering and engineering related careers).

Engineering Design and Development – (Capstone project. Teams of students, guided by community mentors, research, design and construct a solution to an engineering problem).
